Before you get yourself all worked up or even more scared, know that if you are going to your dentist every six months like you are supposed to, then you likely got diagnosed very early. This is good, because in the early stages of gum disease, you can reverse the damage.
Reversing Gum DiseaseThe first thing you have to do if you want to reverse gum disease is getting your treatment at your dentist's office started right away. The sooner you catch gum disease and start treating it, the more you can reverse what happens to your mouth. Your dentist will often start treatment with a scaling and root planing.
This is when they take special tools and go between your gums and the roots of your teeth and clean out any debris or bacteria that is in there. Next, they are going to give your gums a little bit of medication to help them heal and reattach to your teeth properly. The goal of this is to help your gums re-bond to the roots of your teeth and protect your teeth from damage.
On top of this, you are going to have to commit to taking proper care of your mouth. You must brush properly two times per day with specific toothpaste, plus floss at least once and rinse with an anti-bacterial mouthwash.
And you are going to need to see your dentist more often to keep the gum disease under control. If you follow all of these instructions, reversing the gum disease is possible.
